GPS - Uploading a route
You can upload a route recorded on your GPS into RouteGadget. Your GPS route can be in addition to your manually plotted route.
Video tutorial now available.
The GPS route does not register the individual control splits, but does record the time for each point recorded. So the animation should show a more representative guide to your speed all the time rather than averaged over the leg.
Your GPS route will be added to the bottom of the competitor list for your course. You can also manually plot your route as normal.
It can also be interesting to plot your route from memory then upload your GPS one and see how good you memory is!
Suitable file types
There are 5 different formats offered. Click the GPS button at the top right of the page, there is a help button on the GPS import page that links to the developers website: www.routegadget.net/grgpshelp/ This provides very detailed guidance through the process.
Apparently it does now (thanks John). The most common format is a .gpx file, and in my experience the best way to create one is to use SportTracks.
SportTracks is a GPS enabled exercise logbook that in their words:
“Coupled with a GPS receiver SportTracks will automatically track the distance, time and pace of your workouts. You’ll be able to take a high level view and track your progress over time, or dive into the details of a specific exercise to analyze your pace, elevation, or heart-rate performance. Activities can be organized into categories, or summarized by location.“
I have been using it for a few years now and have found it very easy to use and customize. Visit the SportTracks website for more details.

Comments or questions
I am trying to use route gadget and gps for Day 3 of Croeso (8 aug 2008). This is my first attempt.
I have loaded Garmin Training Centyre and located the file. I have imported the data into SportsTrack and the page looks just as above with my route overlaid on a Google Earth map.
When I try to save this route for movoing to Rout Gadget there is no option to save as .gpx.
The available formats are .tiff, .jpg, .bmp and .png.
How do I transfer this into route gadget?
You don’t save it, you export it.
On the left hand side of the SportTracks screen under the Daily Activity heading there is the Export option.
I’m trying to upload my first gpx file for SOL4. I have selected my format (gpx) and browsed to my file and a map of the event has come up. I select my course and zoom out but the gps route is not there (nor are 3 blue dots).
After entering the format and file location, the browser indicates it is fetching from clydesdale.routegadget.co.uk, changing to ‘Applet reitti started’ as the map comes up.
The window is slightly different to that on the grgpshelp page in that the inner top right window just below the tick boxes for ‘Draw your Route’ (unticked) and ‘Snap on/off’ (ticked) is blank and not the 3 boxes shown.
It was due to the problems you had with running a different course to that that which the entry system had you down for.
So there were no splits in the results file for the course you ran and consequently none in the RG files. So it couldn’t relate your gps route to anything.
Thanks Paul.
Firstly , many thanks to Paul for his response on 12 Aug. I was able to draw my gps route on the Pwll Du map and it fitted perfectly without adjustments. Club colleagues have told me this is unusual and means that the map is very accurate. It also revealed exactly how I went astray en route to an early control showing that my recollection/interpretation was incorrect. Very instructive!!
I now have gpx files for an SAX event in Knole Park and for the SOC black course two days ago, but neither club has a link to route gadget.
Is there any way to proceed without provision of files by the clubs?
I was lucky enough to recieve a Garmin Forerunner 410 for Xmas and duly used it today at our Boxing Day Canter (WIM). Having installed the latest Garin Training Centre software to connect to the 410, I can reprt I have been able to save a GPX file and successfully upload it to Routegadet. This is in conctradiction to the information given in this article and I’m keen to give as well as recieve from such an ecxellent site.
Thanks John, I’ve updated the article.
I still think SportTracks is far better, the free version is quite limited now, but I think it’s worth paying for.
I have added a GPX track to my route twice now - spent lots of time gettng it just right, save the route, get a message that it has saved and to click to go back to the map page - only to find the unedited route. What am I doing wrong?
I’m not sure what Dave did wrong but after sending me the file I uploaded it without any problem.
