GPS - Uploading a route

You can upload a route recorded on your GPS into RouteGadget. Your GPS route can be in addition to your manually plotted route.

The GPS route does not register the individual control splits, but does record the time for each point recorded. So the animation should show a more representative guide to your speed all the time rather than averaged over the leg.

Your GPS route will be added to the bottom of the competitor list for your course. You can also manually plot your route as normal.

It can also be interesting to plot your route from memory then upload your GPS one and see how good you memory is!

Suitable file types

There are 5 different formats offered. Click the GPS button at the top right of the page, there is a help button on the GPS import page that links to the developers website: www.routegadget.net/grgpshelp/ This provides very detailed guidance through the process.

Unfortunately the Garmin Training Centre software that comes with it’s GPS range does not produce a suitable file. The most common format is a .gpx file, and in my experience the best way to create one is to use SportTracks.

SportTracks is a free software download that in their words:

“Coupled with a GPS receiver SportTracks will automatically track the distance, time and pace of your workouts. You’ll be able to take a high level view and track your progress over time, or dive into the details of a specific exercise to analyze your pace, elevation, or heart-rate performance. Activities can be organized into categories, or summarized by location.”

I have been using it for over a year now and have found it very easy to use and customize. Visit the SportTracks website for more details.
