RouteGadget option for your club?
Following numerous requests from clubs wanting to use RouteGadget but unable to, due to hosting restrictions or lack of computing/web skills, I set up RouteGadget UK.
Any club can have their own installation with a web address of: yourclub.routegadget.co.uk
There are costs involved, the hosting & bandwidth, & my time if I get involved with the uploading of events. I am not looking to make this a commercial venture, but to offer a service that doesn’t end up costing me money.
One of the issues is the use of maps based on Ordnance Survey data. A licence fee of £56 per year is payable to the OS for displaying maps on websites. This fee is per website, so only one licence is needed for RouteGadget UK, which I have.
I ask for a contribution of £22 per year per club. If the bandwidth used is much greater than expected I may have to revise the cost for next year.
You will have access and permissions to upload the files required and to configure it for your club. This cost assumes that you will do all the uploading of event data and manage the web space allocated. You will have an FTP account to a sub domain of yourclub.routegadget.co.uk. (although the uploading of event data is done via any web browser). I will install and set up a copy of RouteGadget for your exclusive use.
The uploading of data for an event can be done by anyone that is reasonably computer literate. Download and read through the User Guide to see if you think you can manage it. It may be possible for me to do this for you if I am available at the time of your event, but I would need to charge for my time.
Or, do it yourself
To install RG on your club website you need to be able to run CGI scripts on the server and FTP files to your server. It is easier to setup if the server is running on Linux rather than Windows. RouteGadget is written in Java and needs Java to be installed on the visitor’s computer to work, 95% of home computers have it but some corporate networks may not. All uploading of event data is done from your web browser, so no special software is needed after installation. You need to make sure that you have enough bandwidth to cope with the heavy use after a large event (South Ribble’s Whitbarrow event had 342 routes posted and used 800MB of bandwidth in the first few days).
