RouteGadget option for your club?

Following numerous requests from clubs wanting to use RouteGadget but unable to, due to hosting restrictions or lack of computing/web skills, I set up RouteGadget UK.

Processing Relays

A method for processing relays as reported by Robin Strain.

How to use it on your own computer

You can have an installation on your own computer. Electronic results data is not required but could be used if available.
This could be useful at a training camp.

Out of bounds, crossings, uncrossable etc.

These things are often part of the overprint (purple bits) along with the course and are not on the OCAD map file that is used for the background map in RouteGadget. So are not visible when someone is looking at routes etc.

Guide to Non Standard Events

The software and hardware we use for our mapping and results is about as non standard as you get.  We use Joe Lee punching and a customised CAD package for the mapping.  The output files from these are text and postscript respectively.

Can I install it on my website?

To install RG on your club website you need to be able to run CGI scripts on the server and FTP files to your server.
It is easier to setup if the server is running on Linux rather than Windows. RouteGadget is written in Java and needs Java to be installed on the visitor’s computer to work, 95% of home computers have it but some corporate networks may not.

This explains the process that you need to go through to get an event up and working if you are using RouteGadget UK. Last updated March 07.

Crossing points

If the planner puts in a compulsory crossing point in a course within Condes or OCAD, the XML export file confuses Routegadget and it treats it as a control on the course. This means that there is a split time missing as far as RG is concerned, and so it will not allow the route to be recorded.

Java issues

RG is a Java applet and Java must be installed for RG to work. If you don’t already have it on your computer you may be asked if you want to download it. Java is used in a lot of web applications and is very common on mobile phones. You can find out more by visiting www.java.com.

Missing control data

Faulty controls or timed crossing points (later removed from the splits) will cause problems to RouteGadget.
The files that RG creates contain a string of times in seconds from the start for each control, separated by a semi-colon. It depends on the event software being used as to what happens.

Map copyright

There is an issue with maps that are based on Ordnance Survey data, you need a licence to display them on a website. If your club uses OS based maps you will need to obtain one, it costs £55.81 per year. It is called a “Paper Map Copying Licence” and is available from the OS website.
I have one for RouteGadget UK but you would need your own if you installed RG on your own website.
